Dealing with frustration in Design

Ten milestones in the path of Design frustration to complete All these is about fear, frustration and confrontation. This article is about ten different types of annoyance that you will find in your career.

I would like to ask you to have a look at this list and think for ten seconds how many of them have you experienced (It does not matter your job, your age, experience or whatsoever):

  • ‘I felt like a great imposter when I started in design’
  • ‘It was very frustrating to find a job in the sector’
  • ‘I constantly received negative feedback or the typical thing I like and this I do not’
  • ‘I had a lot of difficulties learning processes, tools, all that’
  • ‘What they sold me had nothing to do with reality’
  • ‘I have to get on with my portfolio’
  • ‘There were a thousand departments, infighting, people trampling and elbowing’
  • ‘I had problems with my boss, we saw things differently’
  • ‘An impressive workload. I ended up burned’
  • ‘In the end they fired me, I don’t want to know anything about them’

Impostor Syndrome

Whether if you jump from other profession or get into UX Design, you may suffer from what they call Imposter syndrome. Related to your first job or in your learning period, you could have feelings saying yourself that you can’t do anything about it, or that you can´t fail, or feeling like a fake, depending too much on luck, or just don´t believing in success anymore.

Has to be more with perfectionists, solution is rewriting own aims, recognize the feeling, embrance it, seek support or mentorship. Preeti Talwai talks in an article about two nice projects such as Professional Purgatory (ie. when you are reinventing yourself) and Label Limbo (ambivalence)
